The Weight You Carry Doesn't Have to Be Yours Alone

Why men's mental health is a silent crisis, and how counseling can help you get your life back.

June is Men's Mental Health Month, and if you're a man reading this, there's a good chance you've spent most of your life being told, directly or indirectly, that struggling is something to push through, not talk about. That needing help is a sign of weakness. That real strength means handling it yourself.

It's a lie. And it's costing lives.

As a therapist with over 25 years of experience working with men, I've seen firsthand what happens when we keep carrying weight that was never meant to be carried alone. I've also seen what's possible when men decide, sometimes for the first time, to ask for support. The difference is remarkable.

This post is for any man who's been white-knuckling it. Whether you're dealing with stress, anxiety, anger, relationship struggles, or addiction, or just a persistent feeling that something isn't right, this is for you.

The Numbers Are Staggering

We don't talk about men's mental health nearly enough, but the data tells a story we can't ignore:

These aren't just statistics. These are fathers, husbands, brothers, sons, and colleagues. Men who are hurting but don't know how, or feel they're not allowed, to say so.

Depression in Men Looks Different

One reason so many men go undiagnosed and untreated is that depression and anxiety don't always look the way people expect. In men, the signs often show up as behavior rather than emotion, which makes them easy to miss, explain away, or mistake for something else.
Watch for these patterns in yourself or someone you care about:
  • Anger and irritability
Not sadness, frustration that comes out of nowhere, a short fuse, feeling constantly on edge
  • Withdrawing from people
Pulling away from family and friends, going quiet, turning down plans you used to enjoy
  • Increased alcohol or substance use
Using drinking, substances, or other numbing behaviors to take the edge off
  • Physical symptoms
Chronic headaches, fatigue, back pain, or stomach issues with no clear medical cause
  • Overworking or reckless behavior
Staying buried in work, taking risks, or staying constantly distracted to avoid what's underneath
If any of these sound familiar, you're not broken, you're human. And you're not alone

The Myths That Keep Men Stuck

The barriers to men seeking help are real, but most of them are built on beliefs that don't hold up under examination. Let's name them directly:

How Counseling Actually Helps Men

I want to be specific here, because 'therapy helps' is vague. Let me tell you what counseling with me actually does for men who commit to the work:

| Counseling isn't about being fixed. It's about being equipped with the self-awareness and skills to live the life you actually want

Men often tell me they wish they'd come in sooner. Not because the work is easy, but because the relief of finally having a space to be honest, without judgment, without having to manage someone else's reaction, is something they didn't know was possible.
My approach is direct and practical. I use Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy because it works: we identify what's happening, understand why, and build a plan to change it. Sessions are grounded in real life, not theory.

What Getting Started Looks Like

I know the first call or email can feel like the hardest part. Here's what you can expect when you reach out to Space Counseling:

A no-pressure consultation.
We start with a conversation, not an interrogation. I want to understand what's going on and whether we're a good fit. There's no commitment required.
A confidential space.
Everything we discuss stays between us. You can be honest without worrying about it getting back to your employer, your family, or anyone else.
A practical plan.
From the first session, we're building something useful. You'll leave with more clarity and at least one concrete thing to work with.
Flexible scheduling.
Sessions are available evenings and weekdays at my Colts Neck, NJ office, serving Freehold, Marlboro, Manalapan, Tinton Falls, and surrounding Monmouth County communities.
